Academic regalia

Look the Part in a Cap, Tassel, and Gown

All graduates must wear academic regalia appropriate for their degree. Plan ahead — ordering regalia early ensures it arrives before Commencement.

Order your academic regalia (cap, gown, etc.) through .

ISP International Students should visit the ISP Celebration webpage  for ordering details.

Decorations on graduation caps (mortar boards) are allowed as a symbol of accomplishment. Caps are the only part of the regalia you may decorate.

Celebrate and decorate within the guidelines below:

  • Only the top of the cap may be decorated.
  • Do not hang decorations from the cap.
  • Do not add tall embellishments that obstruct the view of others.
  • Caps must not have any advertisements, symbols, words, or slogans conveying messages inappropriate at a commencement ceremony.
  • Caps must not threaten the safety of others or use any hate speech of any kind.
  • Obscene, profane or vulgar language is expressly prohibited.
  • Only ¶¶Òõ̽̽App-approved and recognized visual identifiers are permitted to be worn during graduation ceremonies.
¶¶Òõ̽̽App reserves the right to disallow any decorations deemed offensive, profane, or inappropriate.

A graduation stole is a decorative sash worn around the neck during a graduation ceremony. It hangs down over the front of the gown, usually reaching about waist level.

Students may wear stoles associated with student organizations recognized by the Marion Campus Student Government Association or officially approved by a department and properly registered with the Office of Community Life. The list of recognized student organizations can be found at .

*Note: No personal, individual stoles are allowed.
